Maintenance is an important part of mower ownership, and is key in lengthening the service life of your model. However, if you’re not interested in visiting a service center every time you need an oil change, we recommend reading through our helpful guide below. In it we describe exactly how to perform a successful oil change, using basic tools and equipment you likely already have lying around your garage.

Setting Up

Changing your oil can be a messy endeavor, so you’ll want to prep your area for the upcoming mess. Lay down a tarp or some old newspapers to protect your floor from spilled oil, and make sure to have a few blocks on hand to raise up your model while you work. You’ll also want to have a funnel, gloves, socket wrench, a few rags, and an old container on hand to help you successfully complete your oil change. Don’t forget you’ll also need to have at least a quart of fresh oil to refill your lawn mower, and a new filter to replace the dirty one.

Completing The Oil Change

To help your oil change go smoothly, we recommend running your engine for a few minutes to help your old oil drain quickly. Afterward, place your mower up onto the blocks and position your contained under the drain plug before using your socket wrench to remove the plug. While your oil drains, use a rag and some fresh oil to clean your drain plug, and take a moment to saturate your new filter in fresh oil. Once your model has finished draining, use your wrench to remove the bolts holding the dirty filter in place. These will also need to be wiped and cleaned with fresh oil before they can be used to secure your new filter into place. Once your filter is inserted, tighten the bolts and reattach your drain plug. Refill your model with fresh oil and once again run your engine for a few minutes.
